Managing Emotions in the Classrooms

Emotional competence is what result and enhances our personal relation and professional performance and ultimately help us attain and increase our quality of life. According to Daniel Goleman, Emotional Competence is a learned ability grounded in emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence influences our potential competencies, and developing the emotional literacy necessary for quality life, life satisfaction and over-all happiness. Such skills include the development of self, social, relational awareness and competence, and self, social/relational management and competence.
By developing emotional intelligence, individuals can become more productive and successful at what they do, and help others become more productive and successful too.
Today, one of the highest demands for effective teaching is managing emotions in the classroom and in dealing with the students, this creates positive learning environment that surely contributes to effective teaching learning process.
Many teachers choose teaching as a profession because they valued the intrinsic rewards they received ( Iwanicki, 2001 ) and because they enjoyed the emotional and personal benefits of the job itself, such is a personal and sense of accomplishment (Guad, 2005) indicated the importance and value of the emotional intelligence skill and academic achievement, students with benefits from learning and applying emotional intelligence skills to improve the academic performance of the learners.
The following are personal/emotional competencies that we teaches should possess:
Self-Awareness: People who are emotionally self-aware know which emotion they are experiencing at any given time. They recognize the relationship between their own thoughts and feelings and are cognizant of their beliefs, values and goals.
Accurate Self Evaluation. People who accurately evaluate themselves are aware of their strengths, but also recognize and accept their weaknesses.
Self-Confidence /Self Esteem. These are people who are self assured and know their self-worth. They present themselves and their views authentically and powerfully. They respectfully stand up for their views/truths even when doing so is unpopular. They make decisions and follow up with appropriate actions. They are open and respectful of their opinions even in the face of disagreement.
Sel-Control. These people do well in regulating and managing their reactions/ feelings. They are collected, centered, focused and positive even in emotionally challenging situations and under pressure.
Trustworthiness and Conscientiouness. These people are ethical and are consistently reliable in their commitments, accountable for their responsibilities and keep their promises.
Innovative and Adaptable. They are original in their ideas and open to new solutions. They handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously. They manage changing circumstances effectively.
Motivational and Growth Orientation. These people are inwardly motivated to grow and achieve desired goals despite challenges and difficulties. These people always adhere to ethical standards and principles, and constantly look to gain new/knowledge and opportunities that are compatible with their vision and improves their overall conduct.

Paglalayag sa Diwa ng Isang Bata

Hapong hapo at pagod na pagod ako ng dumating sa bahay ng hapong iyon. Bahagya lang akong nakakain ng hapunan at naghanda na sa pagtulog. Biling baligtad ako ng gabing yon, ang hapong katawan ay hindi sapat para takamin ako ng antok. Pilit pumapasok sa isip ko ang naging pag- uusap namin ng isa kong istudyanteng Grade VIII. Advisory class ko siya, malimit na maitala na lumiliban sa klase, malulungkutin at nitong mga huling araw ay parang wala sa sarili.Kung pumapasok sa klase ay halos hindi mailarawan ang mukha , mahiyain , di nakikisalamuha sa kapwa..
Sa klase ko, pinipilit ko siyang magsalita, pero halos walang salita na mamutawi sa kaniyang mga labi. Malamlam ang kaniyang mga mata na wari ko ba ay galing sa pag-iyak. Pinaupo ko na lamang siya at hinikayat na makinig na lamang sa leksiyon naming ng araw na ‘yon.
Hanggang dumating ang hapon , tapos na ang last period namin pero naiwan pa siya, pinilit kong tapusin ang ilang ulat na kinakailangang maisumite kinabukasan. Pagkatapos kong magawa ang ulat, naroon pa rin siya sa kanyang upuan, lumapit ako sa kanya at sinimulan ko ito ng simpleng pangungumusta. Mahina at alanganin ang naging tugon , “di po mabuti”, aniya. Hanggang ang pagtatanong ko ay humantong sa isang pag-uusisa. Di niya sinasagot ang mga tanong ko, hanggang sa unti-unti siyang humihikbi hanggang sa pag-iyak, sa palahaw na iyak. Niyakap ko siya, at ako’y napaluha din kahit hindi ko alam ang tunay na dahilan ng kaniyang pag-iyak. Dama ko na may malaki siyang problema.. Nanunuot sa puso ko ang nais niyang sabihin, bawat pagpatak ng luha niya ay kumukurot sa aking puso.Ang palahaw na pag-iyak ay unti-unting naging paghikbi na lamang . . . hanggang sa ganap na katahimikan.
Unti-unti siyang bumitaw sa mahigpit na pagkakayap at ang sabi niya “Ma’am , uuwi na po ako . Nabanaag ko sa kanyang mga mukha na meron siyang tinatagong suliranin . Ayaw niyang magsalita ukol ditto at nagmadaling magpaalam na siya ay uuwi. Sa kanyang pag-iyak sa aking balikat , naramdaman ko ang kagaanan ng kanyang kalooban , nadama ko na naibsan siya ng kaunti sa problemang kanyang nadarama sa buhay.
Hanggang sa makauwi ako ay iyon pa rin ang iniisip ko, bahagya aakong pumikit at umusal ng dasaL. “Panginoon, kung amoman po and dinadala ni Ana, sana po ay proteksyunan ninyo po siya, ilagay sa sentro ng iyong palad at tulungan na matapos ang lahat ng ito na nagpapabigat sa kanya”. Napakabata pa ni Ana para danasin ang isang problema .
Hating gabi na at dilat pa rin ang aking mga mata. Iniisip ko pa rin ang pangyayaring iyon. Ilan pa kayang mga kabataan ang may mga suliranin pero hindi nasasabi ang mga suliraning iyon? Ilan pa kayang mga kabataan na sa halip na maging masaya sa pagiging kabataan ay may mabibigat nang suliranin sa buhay? Mga kabataang tinawag ni Jose Rizal na pag-asa ng bayan, sandigan ng kinabukasan . Naisip ko ng gabing yaon, bukas na bukas ay kakausapin kong muli si Ana. Nais makatulong sa kanya at pinikit ko na ang aking mga mata na puno ng pag-asa na sana ay magkaroon ng liwanag at solusyon ang suliranin ni Ana.
