When you feel your determination to educate and mold young individuals to become better persons are wavering, you need some motivation in order to keep going!
According to John Maxwell, a difficult time can be more readily endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose.
Teachers are tasked to prepare the child on his quest for higher learning and to prepare him for a better future. Teachers are molders and can definitely change lives since the ultimate goal is the total development of the learner. It can be a ministry in response to God’s commandment in Prov. 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. We need to raise educational standards for our graduates to be globally competitive. This is a challenge and need not be taken for granted. We must work hard and focus on the reward of our labor…….Successful career men and women in the future! But it’s not as easy as it seems. The declining academic performance, coupled with behavioral problems as seen among our young individuals, confronts our educational system. We hear about bullying, involvement in fraternities, on line computer games even during class hours, and many others. These have made our roles complicated and difficult to play. Our present situation calls for persistent, strong-willed, committed and dedicated teachers. We as teachers are ingenious multi-gifted leaders with a great vision. We are given that mission to mentor young individuals to become knowledgeable, God-fearing and responsible citizens of the Science community. If we are almost desperate that our students won’t learn anything from us, we need not quit but to keep going. If the learners have not learned, the teacher has not taught. If the learners have not learned, the teacher is, and should be left with a sad and empty feeling. If we falter, we lose!
Let us therefore be prepared to face professional test along the way for us to respond to the needs of our students. It is imperative to understand the causes of negative attitude and make our students learn to love school. We need to have that faith and be optimistic that no matter how difficult it is, we can achieve what we aim for. We should be alert of what could go wrong as we deal with the kind of students we are handling. Teachers have broad influence on students’ learning and growth including social, emotional, and ethical development. When students find their mentors supportive and caring, they are less likely to do wrong. If they feel accepted, there is a greater chance for them to change their ways to achieve better performance in school.
Derrick Meador made mention about qualities of an effective teacher. Love and passion for teaching young individuals according to him is the most important quality that every teacher should possess. There are too many discouraging factors associated with teaching that is difficult enough on a teacher who absolutely loves what he does, much less on one who does not have the drive, passion, or enthusiasm for it. He added that an effective teacher demonstrates a caring attitude. Taking time to get to know a student on a personal level takes a lot of time and dedication, but this can help create respect and trust which is contributory to the learning process. The most effective teachers are often the ones that many students consider to be most difficult. This is because they challenge their students and push them harder. These are the teachers who are often students’ least favorite teachers at the time, but then later in life they are the ones that are remembered and thanked because of how well they prepared them for life. If you challenge your students and maximize your time with them, they learn more than they ever thought possible.
Elbert Hubbard said, “A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.” I believe that God has chosen us to minister in the lives of our learners. Therefore, we should keep going to produce high performing learners equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve their aspirations in life.
