We live today in a troubled world. According to Thomas Paine, “these are the times that try men’s souls.” Crises after crisis tend to beset our nation. It seems that the dark forebodings of our pessimists are truths. Taking a hard look at the daily happenings around us, we see and hear killings, kidnappings, rapes, robberies, carnappings, and natural calamities like lahar devastation, floods, typhoons, tsunami, earthquake, drug addiction, and prostitution. These are some cold facts we could not deny.
But ours is not a hopeless case. These are only challenges to our human intelligence. We can overcome them if we possess the strength of will and a godly character. For if a single individual with bright ideas can do much to conquer these problems, how much more if all of us would join together to fight these trials.
To the DepEd Officials and employees, this is a great challenge to us. We need to do something about the multifarious problems facing our country. Not only those who belong to the higher echelon of our agencies are expected to contribute much to the solution of these dilemmas but all of us down to the rank and file.
Educating the youths, being our primary and foremost concern as educators has a tremendous relevance towards the current happenings in our country. We need to continuously inculcate moral values among our youths either through precept or example. We should equip them with relevant knowledge, information and other basic literacy skills for active involvement in their respective communities. We need to teach them usable livelihood skills for self-reliance. Our learners should be taught not only leadership skills but also habits of obedience to the laws of our land. They should be educated not only to earn an honest living but also how to live righteously with their fellowmen.
Education is our last weapon to in order to survive with the crisis we are facing every now and then. This can be strengthened the weak moralfiber of our people. This will enable us to see the silver lining behind every cloud looming in our horizon. This can teach us several ways and means of surmounting any kind of problem we encounter along the way. Yes, education can propel us towards economic recovery and moral regeneration.
If we remain callous or indifferent in our locality, then we are not helping build our country. If we remain negligent to our duties and abusive to our rights and privileges, then we deserve the blame of the future generation. If we do not contribute something in any manner that will help alleviate our country’s problems, then the worse will surely occur which will affect everybody to our national downfall.
Fellow teachers, let us not fail our pupils. Let us work hand in hand for the realization of our national goal for quality education to all our charges. This is the only path to build our people. For then can we say without fear of contradiction that the kind of education we give to our children is truly relevant to our crisis-filled nation, the Philippines.

“There’s no more constant than change.” It means no one or thing is exempted in changing process. Like of education; there is a continuous innovation, specifically from Basic Education to K to 12 Curriculum.
One of the trending issues on education; is about the implementation of K to 12 Curriculum. To understand its purposes, we must analyze first its whole program from kindergarten to senior level.
To decrease the number of out-of- school youth, all children must be exposed earlier on education so they would realize the importance of having education during their young age. And also, they will learn and enjoy earlier on how to socialize and to become responsible through their school activities, games, and parties. Hence; through kindergarten, they will achieve those joyful but meaningful experiences with their age. And that will be their initial foundation to take another level of education.
In emphasizing the communication skills, the implementation of ‘Mother Tongue’ as a Medium of Instruction from Grade one to three helps to enhance first the pupils’ mother tongue. Meaning, they have chance to use their own dialect, and they will easily understand any subject if they are allowed to communicate through their native language/dialect. Example; if his mother tongue is Ilocano, he is allowed to use that during discussion (It is only allowed from Grade 1 to 3). And through that, many pupils will develop their ‘Bilingual Skills’. It means they are capable to communicate with two languages/dialects. Relatively, Dr. Jose Rizal could communicate using two or more languages or dialects (Multilingual Skills).
Underemployment and unemployment can be decreased if there is also a ‘Junior- and –Senior Divisions’ from Grade Seven to Twelve. The junior level is from Grade Seven to Ten, and then the senior level is from Grade Eleven to Twelve. If the students are in the senior level, they are allowed to choose their wanted field that they should practice. These major fields are; Academics, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, or Sports and Arts. For example, if he wants to be an author and he has potential--- he has right to choose Academic Courses that can help to enhance his talent and to prepare himself for tertiary level. So he has enough preparation to pursue his chosen profession.
It is therefore, K to 12 helps to decrease the number of out-of-school youth, to emphasize the students’ communication skills, and also to control the number of underemployment and unemployment.
