PARENTS' INFLUENCE ON THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
By: REYNALDO M. DELA CRUZ, PhD
School Principal II
Pursuing education is the most common provided recommendation of parents to their children for their bright future. Child's aspiration regarding education is based on the degree of influence observed from their environment. Parents are the primary source of influence for their children and serve as the driving force that guide and support them for this purpose. The commendable behavior of responsible parents would be their confidence and inspiration to pursue a higher level of education.
Parents invested time and energy in maintaining a family would report a closely integrated family relationship in which they have influence over their children. The manifestation of their love and concern to education of their children is very important. They need to ask their children what things they need in school and once in a while answer whatever questions their children ask them. Constant display of enthusiasm to help them in their lessons, manifest behavior that they enjoy their presence at home, want them to be actively engaged in school activities and socialize with friends, classmates, and the peer group, immediately help them with their problems, and ready to provide their school needs and exert efforts to provide them the best future. From time to time their parents visit the school to confer with teachers as regards their status in school.
It's very important also that they have to allow their children to participate in family discussions, require them to have time for their studies, encourage them to be a member of school organizations, exert efforts to develop their potentials, and give hints of what career they should pursue in college. Most of the time, parents encourage them to pursue higher education.
There are many families in our society with successful children in pursuing higher education. We have to be proud of that the way and main reason of their success is responsible parenthood. Parents who care, planning for the bright future, working hard and doing their best to provide the needs of the family. They serve as inspiration for their children to study and strive further, and are carefully thought about as good models.

Effective Ways in Making a Module in MathematicsBy: EDNA U. DOMINGO
By:Teacher III, Munoz Central Elementary School
Effective teaching involves observing students, listening carefully to their ideas and explanations, having mathematical goals, and using the information to make instructional decisions. Teachers who employ such practices motivate students to engage in mathematical thinking and reasoning and provide learning opportunities that challenge students at all levels of understanding. Effective teaching requires continuing efforts to learn and improve" (NCTM, 2000, p. 19)
For teachers, this modules will help bring alive the process standards in the classroom. They are ideas that can be of direct help to you, showing ways to expand your practice, and, in turn, helping your students better understand mathematics. In a larger sense, these standards promote habits of mathematical thinking that are useful to teachers and students in any mathematical context.
When this modules are used effectively in the classroom, students gain a fuller sense of what mathematics is, and have a greater opportunity for achieving understanding of its concepts.
The hardest thing about doing word problems is taking the Mother –Tongue words and translating them in into English mathematics Terms. The actual math involved is often fairly simple. But figuring out the actual equation can seem nearly impossible. What follows is a list of hints and helps. However, to really learn "how to do" word problems, you will need to make an innovation of terminologies of mathematics that can be easily understood by your pupils.
As a teacher I created some steps to be done before making a modules in mathematics.
The first step to effectively translating and solving word problems is to read the problem entirely. Don't start trying to solve anything when you've only read half a sentence. Try first to get a feel for the whole problem; try first to see what information you have, and what you still need
The second step is to work in an organized manner. Figure out what you need but don't have, and name things. Pick variables to stand for the unknowns, clearly labelling these variables with what they stand for. Draw and label pictures neatly. Explain your reasoning as you go along. And make sure you know just exactly what the problem is actually asking for. You need to do this for two reasons: Working clearly will help you think clearly, and figuring out what you need will help you translate your final answer back into English.
Regarding (2) above: It can be really frustrating (and embarrassing) to spend fifteen minutes solving a word problem on a test, only to realize at the end that you no longer have any idea what "x" stands for, so you have to do the whole problem over again
The third step is to look for "key" words. Certain words indicate certain mathematical operations and that will be the best innovation that I will create for my Grade 1 pupils .A modules that explains and translates some of the Mother-Tongue Language into English term.

Video-Clips Presentations for Grade 1 Mathematics : Effective Alternative Instructional Devices
By: EDNA U. DOMINGO
Teacher III, Munoz Central Elementary School
The teaching strategy of Basic Operation in Mathematics is designed to improve the delivery of instruction. Objectives are enriched to include the application of ICT in pupils’ output. The major change, however, is in the strategies by which instruction is conducted from the usual visual aids, charts, chalk, and talk. With the new strategy, the teacher concrete her teaching through video – clip presentations.
Video is an instructional and assessment tool that generates excitement. It is the perfect method of learning since it excites both auditory and visual learners. It also stimulates a student’s emotions and is an effective way for teachers to be used for interactive instruction.
The use of video clip is an excellent method to add value to teaching and assignment. The above benefits that could be derived from using video led the proponent to pursue making an instructional and assessment tool in teaching Mathematics.
Most of the pupils in Grade 1 know how to read, count & write numbers. However, It is pretty obvious that there is a low performance of grade 1 pupils when it come in understanding the basic operations in mathematics they don’t know how to add specifically two digits numbers and most of them finds it hard to subtract numbers .How can we solve this difficulties? What will be the use of video-clips presentation in mathematics basic operations in grade 1? How can we turn low level of performance in math in terms of basic operation to high level of performance?
In a sense, Grade 1 teachers search ways to guide students in better understanding the lesson. It allows them to explore their minds with their own learning . In addition to this, it gives them the opportunity to teach actively by watching video clips. This will lead them to participate in collaborative learning after the video clip presentation. The students learn when they are well-motivated; hence the proponent thought of using video-clip presentations to encourage the learners to pay attention to what is being taught.
Furthermore, the video - clips presentation in mathematics allows the students to gain more understanding of the discipline being introduced to them and how important are the basic operations in mathematics.
Moreover, the interest of the learners at the present time is mostly fueled by computers. This led the proponent to let the students connect using the video-clip allowing them to be modernized and innovative when it comes to learning.

Good Supervision Is Known By Its Results
GENALYN B. TANGONAN

In any human endeavor it is the results that counts in the last analysis. In the field of EDUCATION the result of the TEACHER, of the PRINCIPAL or SUPERVISORS for that matter must and does hinge on one fundamental criterion: whether or not he/she has produced any worthwhile result as a consequence of his/her efforts.
A Teacher may be going through the motions of teaching in an apparently “excellent” manner, yet his/her teaching performance may show unsatisfactory results. Similarly, a principal or supervisor may, on the surface, be doing a “splendid” job of exercising his/her supervisory functions, but the outcome in terms of pupil growth and development for instance may be saddening.
It is a truism that good supervision has been done to the extent that both the desired and desirable results have been realized. But this statement should be qualified. For it is not correct at all to say that results should be at any cost, even at the sacrifice of, say, the orderly processes and democratic values. For if we do this, the results that have been gained lose their real value and significance. Worthwhile means should be used to achieve worthwhile goals. This is a dictum that is keeping with the democratic way of life. It is a concept that governs the actions of men imbued with reason, fair play and common sense.
An education EXPERT identifies five characteristics of supervision:
SUPERVISION IS ATTITUDINAL – The attitude of the principal or supervisor and his/her ability to develop wholesome and constructive attitude in co-workers determine the effectiveness of supervision. Supervision is attitudinal because attitude towards life in general, toward the school as a social institution, and toward leadership in particular, determines the supervisory program.
SUPERVISION IS CREATIVE – Creative supervision encourages teachers to feel free to think for themselves in matters pertaining to objectives, curriculum organization and content, methods of teaching and methods of evaluation. It encourages teachers to share voluntarily with the principal or supervisor and co-workers that which they think.
SUPERVISION IS COOPERATIVE – In the school that practices the criterion of oneness, the entire faculty, the parents, and other citizens work harmoniously in the refinement of purposes and curricula and even in classroom or out-of-school procedures.
SUPERVISION IS SCIENTIFIC – A supervisory program attains a commendable status only when procedures adhere to scientific method. Scientific methods are based on (a) facts, (b) quantitative description of facts, (c) suspended judgment, (d) concern with all relevant facts,(e) sensitiveness to problems, (f) effort to discover rather than to prove, (g) the guest for more inclusive generalization.
SUPERVISION IS EFFECTIVE – The challenge of effectiveness will direct attention to the difference between teaching only for the mastery of facts and teaching for attitudes and better modes of living. It will continually direct more attention to the development of useful skills and habits and the attitudes that are meaningful for pupil maturation for each grade, and for each individual.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF A TEACHER
by: Josephine S. Quinit
T-III MNHS – Main
Teacher plays an important role not only in the four corners of the classroom but also in the society. As second parent to his students he serves the guiding light to the young generations’ future. He tends to influence his students and this has lasting impact in their lives . Nevertheless, it should really be a good kind of influence that should mark in them. In this manner, he needs to have good qualities to keep a better teacher who serves as the role model and set good examples through the words he speaks and by the actions he takes. These may not be simple, however, can be considered as good attributes that a teacher must possess:
§ An Encouraging Personality /Character
A teacher’s entire personality must be encouraging as it reflects on the minds of the students his every words, deeds and thoughts which also gives an impression of an upright life .
§ Passion for Children and Teaching
A teacher must be passionate about teaching and working with children. He must be excited about influencing students' lives and understands the impact he has.
§ Effective Discipline Skills
A teacher must have an effective discipline skills and can promote positive behaviors and change in the classroom.
§ Strong Rapport with Students
A teacher must develop a strong rapport with students and establishes trusting relationships.
§ Good Classroom Management Skills
A teacher must have good classroom management skills and can ensure good student behavior, effective study and work habits, and an overall sense of respect in the classroom instead of fear.
§ High Expectations
A teacher must have high expectations of his students and encourages everyone to always work at his best level.
§ Knowledge of Subject Matter
This may seem obvious, but is sometimes overlooked. A teacher must have incredible knowledge of and enthusiasm for the subject matter he is teaching. He must be prepared to answer questions and keep the material interesting for the students.

The Teacher’s Joy in Giving
Josephine S. Quinit
Teacher - III
Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. In giving there is joy, but giving has never been easy. But because of love we can give even the most precious possession we have.
One great example is when God gave us His son Jesus, to suffer and die on the cross. God gave us His son because He loves us so much that we may enjoy the life eternal in His kingdom.
Our God knew what His Son Jesus had to undergo but God found joy in giving us His son because He cares for us, He wants us to live in a place where problems do not exist.
The ultimate manifestation of our love is in giving. To our family, we give everything. We can also give great things to other people which will help them somehow.
When the three magi looked for the baby who was born a king, they brought gifts only for a king. The baby was the king of kings and though they found him lying down just in a manger, the three magi offered him gold, myrrh and frankincence. Each gift represented who really Jesus was and what mission he was going to fulfill.
The gold repesented the fact that Jesus was really royal, the myrrh was for the importance that Jesus was born to die and the frankincence supported the claim that Jesus was divine.
The baby was only God’s child, but because of His love to mankind, He gave this Child to save us from our sins that we may have an everlasting life. (John 3:16)
In a teacher’s life there is so much to give to his students. A teacher could give his most important treasure which is time. In giving time, the students receive and learn wisdom, affection and compassion.
How could a teacher give wisdom? A teacher does not only teach lessons which will make students educated for a brighter future, but a teacher could use his time sharing the lessons taken from the book of life which is the bible. This kind of learning will help the students travel the course of life’s challenges. A teacher could prepare his students to accept trials and struggles with weapons that come from the power of God our Creator.
How could a teacher give affection? A teacher is considered the second parent of students because the students regard the school their second home. He does teach with love attending to each student’s problems and worries. A teacher helps the students find solutions to their troubles. Giving time to communicate with students to develop self esteem and self confidence is the best gift a teacher could give to his students.
How could a teacher teach compassion? When a teacher sympathizes with the student’s difficulties and suffering, he is compassionate. In dealing with them fairly the students learn compassion. The teacher could set good examples to his students through his actions and speech.
It then proves that teaching is a noble profession because a teacher spends longer time in school than in his own home. He molds the positive character of his students. A teacher who finds time in giving enjoys the joy in giving.

Molding Good Characters and Habits Among Youth
Josephine S. Quinit
Teacher - III
The statement from our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal “ the youth is the hope of our nation” can be intertwined with what King Solomon’s wise taught (Proverbs 22:6) says, “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. Parents should teach and train their children to help them develop good habits and positive traits.
Character is the most important possession a person could have, because it mirrors his personality. It is the foundation of one’s success. Good character building is of great importance. It directs one’s life as it is developed in the usual routine of daily activities. It helps one harvest the real value of life as it becomes a natural part of living. Everything one does in his life is the result of his habits. The good ones bring peace, joy and power and the bad ones steal the peace , joy and prevent success.
Teachers take the place of the parents in school, they play a significant role in molding the character and personality of the students. They have as much influence as parents in molding and shaping the youth. They train the youth in such a way that when they grow big they will not depart from it.
Proper guidance and support provide a meaning in one’s life and help shape one’s character in harmony with the purpose of life which is another aim to motivate students’ every action.
At their young age teachers and parents should start molding the students’ character. Teachers and parents alike should invest time in helping them develop their positive character instead of waiting for them to get adults and change.
To mold one’s character is to train his moral discipline. Both the parents and the teachers should guide children to…. be always truthful in all things and in every aspect of life; teach them how to work hard and appreciate quality leisure time; inspire them to excel wherever they go and do their best whatever they do; train them to have patience and perseverance; conquer all fears; focus on the positive in life and spare little time for the negative; tell them to do good /avoid evil; above all help them obtain love and have faith in GOD.
